White is the hardest colour to knit in, and the finest one to get right.
In dark colours a lot disappears. A slightly loose stitch, a transition that didn't come out quite even, a join lying the wrong way — it all hides in the shadow.
In white it shows.
That sounds like a warning, and it is really a recommendation. Knit a sweater in white and you see straight away what you are doing. It makes you a better knitter, and it makes you one faster.
