Clocks
Playlist on Repeat · Level: Beginner plus
A wide poncho in garter stitch, knitted top-down without a single seam. The neck is a double edge with a drawstring you can pull as tight as you like, and the hem falls in two points with long fringe.
Ridged. Natural. Cosy.
Styling
Clocks is big enough to wear over a thick sweater, and light enough to wear straight over a shirt. Pull the drawstring tight when it is windy, and leave it open indoors — the neck changes character with one pull.
Perfect if you want
A project that is garter stitch all the way — one round knit, one round purl — with no pattern to count. Suits you if you want a big garment with little to keep track of, and like the natural colour of wool as it comes.
What you get
A digital PDF pattern in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English and German, with all five sizes (XS–XL) in the same file. Nine numbered steps with tick-boxes, two alternatives and a print section.
The story behind the design
The natural colour is not white. It has grey in it, and a little brown — the colour wool has before anyone decides on one. The garter ridges settle in rows downwards and carry the weight, and the garment falls from the neck without pulling anywhere. The name comes from the Coldplay song Clocks.
Playlist on Repeat
Playlist on Repeat gathers the CosyMonday designs that take their name from a song. Clocks is the poncho in that line-up — garter stitch, a drawstring at the neck and fringe at the bottom.
Size
Graded in five sizes, XS to XL. Total length, with fringe: 65 (67) 70 (72) 75 cm, measured from the top of the neck edge. At the bottom the poncho measures 233 (244) 256 (267) 279 cm around.
Yarn & equipment
Puno (Rauma Garn) 811 Natur. You need 6 (6) 7 (7) 8 balls, plus approx. 3 balls for the fringe. Circular needle 6 mm in 40 and 80 cm, five stitch markers, crochet hook and darning needle.
Gauge
14 stitches and 24 rounds garter stitch = 10 × 10 cm on needle 6 mm.
Construction
The neck is cast on first and knitted as a double edge: 24 rounds of garter stitch, two holes for the drawstring at centre front, and then the cast-on edge is folded up on the inside and knitted together with the stitches on the needle. From there the poncho grows out at two increase points, one at centre front and one at centre back, with four yarn overs every other round — they draw two straight lines of eyelets down through the garment. At the bottom an eyelet round that the fringe is hooked into.
What you learn
Garter stitch in the round, a double edge knitted together with the cast-on edge, drawstring holes without changing the stitch count, increasing with yarn overs at two points, and making and attaching fringe evenly.
