Forest Spring – The Beanie

A Head Full of Dreams · Level: Beginner

The green one in the series, and the only one that keeps the same colour from cast-on to crown. Green mohair against natural white alpaca gives a heathered tone that looks like a birch forest just coming into leaf – green, but with light in it.

Simple. Heathered. Full of April.

Styling

Fold the brim narrower for a snug fit, wider for more slouch. The green can take a lot of colour next to it – try it with something red, or let it be the only touch of colour against grey.

Perfect if you want
  • The simplest beanie in the series – no colour changes to keep track of
  • Mock cables without a cable needle
  • A wide folded brim that can be adjusted on the head
  • A quick project on needle 7
  • A first beanie to practise pattern knitting on
What you get

  • One step per page with a tick-off box
  • Cosy Cues with useful technical tips

The story behind the design

Forest Spring Green is not bottle green and not moss green. Held together with natural white alpaca it becomes heathered and light, like a birch forest just before it is fully in leaf. Because there is no colour change, this is the calmest beanie in the series to knit: you cast on, and then there is only the pattern to keep track of.

A Head Full of Dreams

A Head Full of Dreams is a collection inspired by dreams, colour and hope. The designs are made to keep both your head and your thoughts warm – with soft materials, strong colours and a playful look. These are garments that remind you to dream big, create freely and never give up. The beanie series has its starting point in the collection CosyMonday designed for Odd Molly.

Recommended yarn

Mini Alpakka – Sandnes Garn, natural: 1 ball
Fluff – HipKnitShop, Forest Spring Green: 2 balls
Molnlycke sewing thread Metallic, gold: 1 spool

Circular needle 7 mm (40 cm)
Double-pointed needles 7 mm or Magic Loop

Gauge

12 stitches × 17 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on needle 7, three strands

Construction

The beanie is knitted in the round from the bottom up. First 19 rounds of ribbing in 3 twisted knit stitches and 2 purl. Then the work is turned inside out, which forms the fold line the brim is folded along. Above it, mock cables are knitted in a four-round repeat, seven cables in all, before the crown is decreased evenly. The yarn is the same all the way – the ribbing looks a stronger green because the rib packs the mohair more tightly.

What you learn
  • Stretchy cast-on
  • Twisted knit stitch
  • Mock cable
  • Folded brim
  • Using a stitch marker
  • Decreasing for the crown
