Gingerbread – The Sweater
Cabin at Midnight · Level: Advanced beginner
A raglan sweater in six shades of brown, from caramel to burnt sugar. The body counts stripes in width, the sleeves have lice stitch sections and a two-colour border, and they meet only at the shoulder. The wool holds its colour, so the line between two stripes stays as sharp after washing as on the day it was knitted.
Caramel. Coffee. Cream.

Styling
The neck is wide and boat-shaped, and settles against the shoulder by itself. The sleeves are balloon-wide and gathered into a narrow cuff, so the sweater has plenty of volume over the arms.
Wear it with something slim underneath. The width in the sleeves needs calm somewhere.
Perfect if you want
· A sweater with six colours without it looking messy
· To use up leftover yarn you have lying around
· Raglan knitted top-down, without seams
· To try lice stitch and a two-colour border on a small section first
· A wide neck you pull over your head
What you get
A digital PDF in the language of your choice, built for your phone: one step per page, a tick-off box on every step and links to the help videos along the way. At the back is the whole pattern gathered on an A4 sheet for printing, a separate stripe sheet to tick off, and a lined notes page.
All five sizes are in the same file.
The story behind the design
Six balls laid side by side on the floor, in random order. Caramel, coffee, cream, burnt sugar. They belonged together at once.
The steps in the pattern count rounds, never colours. That is why you can swap the whole colour scheme for whatever you have lying around, and the pattern still works.
Cabin at Midnight
Cabin at Midnight is the collection for the garments that belong where it is cold outside and warm inside. Pure wool, clear colours and shapes that can take hard wear — knits you put on in the morning and wear all day.

Gauge
16 stitches × 22 rounds = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette on 6 mm needles.
Knit a swatch before you begin. The width of the whole sweater depends on this one number.
Construction
Knitted top-down, from the neck. The work is divided into four, and the raglan is increased with a yarn over on each side of the marker every other round. The yarn overs remain as visible eyelet lines all the way up to the neck edge.
The sleeves are put on stitch holder cables, and the body is finished with stripes and ribbing. The sleeves are knitted straight down without a single decrease and halved in one round at the cuff — that is what gives the balloon shape.
What you learn
· Raglan increases with yarn overs, so the line stands as an eyelet row
· Lice stitch over an odd number of stitches, which shifts by itself
· Two colours in the same round without the tension tightening
· Balloon sleeve gathered into a cuff in one round
· Joining yarn at a stripe transition so the join doesn't show
Techniques explained in Knittipedia: Lice stitch · Boat neck and off-shoulder · Stripes and colour changes · Raglan
