Pink Pearl – The Beanie

Level: Beginner

A soft beanie in stockinette with a deep folded brim, knitted in pink superwash wool. The beads are sewn on by hand at the end, in a free pattern that is never quite the same from beanie to beanie.

Pink. Personal. Sprinkled.

Styling

Fold the brim deeper for a close-fitting beanie, or keep it narrower for a looser look. The beads sit at the bottom towards the brim, so they show however you fold it.

Perfect if you want
  • A beanie with a personal, hand-sewn touch that is never quite the same twice
  • Soft superwash wool that can be machine washed
  • A project with no colour changes or pattern knitting along the way
  • Five sizes from toddler to adult
  • Two ways to finish the crown in the same pattern
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF) in mobile format
  • One step per page with a tick-off box
  • Cosy Cues with useful technical tips
  • Links to help videos where the technique is used
  • A4 print sheet and notes page at the back
The story behind the design

The beads were left over from another Christmas, in an old jam jar in the cupboard. The thin superwash wool knits up even and light on needle 5.5, and the pink sits somewhere between sweet and cool, like the sky just before dark. Instead of knitting the beads in, they are sewn on afterwards – freely, with no pattern to follow. That way no two beanies turn out the same.

Darning needle, sewing needle and thread
Round beads in glass or plastic, approx. 20–30

Gauge

18 stitches × 30 rounds in stockinette on a 5.5 mm needle = 10 × 10 cm

Construction

The beanie is knitted in the round from the bottom up. The ribbing is knitted with twisted knit stitches for a crisper look, then the work is turned inside out, which forms the fold line. Above it, stockinette is knitted to the desired height, before the crown is either gathered soft and round, or decreased in four clear sections – both finishes are in the pattern. Finally the beads are sewn on by hand in a free pattern.

What you learn
  • Casting on and knitting in the round
  • Twisted knit stitch in ribbing
  • Turning round and folded brim
  • Sewing on beads by hand
  • Two ways to finish the crown
