Rambladress – The Dress

CosyMonday · Level: Advanced beginner

Rambladress came from a street. The stripes are built the way La Rambla looks from above: wide fields of dark and narrow glimpses of light, with no system you can count your way to. That is why the stripe sequence is so long — it is not a repeat, it is an order, and it is followed once.

Long. Striped. Calm.

Styling

The dress is long and flares out at the bottom, so it needs nothing over it. Ankle boots and bare legs, or thick tights when it gets cold. The high neck can be folded down double or left standing as it is.

Perfect if you want
  • A bigger project to keep going over time
  • A dress that falls heavily and hangs straight
  • To knit with four colours without having to hold several strands at once
  • An A-line shape that comes from the stripes themselves, not from calculations
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern in mobile format, with a tick box for each step
  • Five sizes in the same file, XS (S) M (L) XL
  • Stripe sheet at the back with all 33 entries in order, with tick boxes and the increases marked
  • A4 print sheets with all numbers and measurements
  • Cosy Cues along the way
The story behind the design

La Rambla in the middle of the day, where everything moves slowly and nothing is still. The colours are taken from there and laid down in four tones of grey and black, because that is what the street looked like from above. The dress was finished at home, against a log wall, and there it looks completely different. Both are true.

The travel garments

Rambladress belongs to the travel garments at CosyMonday — patterns brought home from a place and knitted where they belong. They are usually simple in shape and let colours and stripes do the work.

Size

XS (S) M (L) XL

Width laid flat: 44 (46) 48 (51) 53 cm
Width at the bottom laid flat: 60 (63) 64 (67) 70 cm
Length from shoulder: 103 (104) 105 (106) 107 cm
Neck height: 17 cm in all sizes

Yarn & equipment

Kos – Sandnes Garn, 62% alpaca / 29% nylon / 9% wool, 50 g = 150 m.

Four colours:
1099 Svart — you need 5 (5) 5 (6) 6 balls
1043 Gråmelert — 2 (2) 3 (3) 3 balls
1021 Lys gråmelert — 1 ball
1012 Natur — 1 ball

Alpaca is chosen because the dress is long. It falls heavily enough for the garment to hang straight instead of standing out, and 150 m per ball keeps the weight down.

Needles
Circular needle 40 cm 5 mm for neck and cuffs
Circular needle 80 cm 6 mm for body, skirt and sleeves
4 stitch markers, 2 stitch holders, darning needle, scissors, tape measure

Gauge

16 stitches × 23 rounds = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette on 6 mm needles.

Knit a swatch. A dress in alpaca stretches lengthwise, so keep your gauge on the firm side rather than the other way round.

Construction

Knitted top-down, from the high neck. The raglan increases are worked on the body only — the sleeves get their full width at once by doubling every stitch twice, which is why they become short and full rather than long. Down the skirt, the width sits in the stripes themselves: thirteen of them begin with an increase on each side.

What you learn
  • Twisted knit stitch
  • Top-down raglan increases, on the body only
  • Puff sleeve shaped by doubling the stitch count
  • Keeping track of a long stripe sequence
