Scientist – Ocean Edition

Level: Beginner plus · XS–XL

An airy sweater with a deep V-neck and puff sleeves. The body is knitted with two yarns held together — Karisma and silver lurex — with a lace pattern at the bottom and stockinette towards the shoulder. The neck is finished with an eyelet border at the back only. One of my designs from the time the brand was called Ponchogirl.

Blue turquoise. Silver lurex. Lace pattern.

Styling

The deep V-neck works with a necklace as well as a simple T-shirt underneath. The silver thread lets the sweater work in the evening without becoming a party sweater.

Perfect if you want
  • To try two yarns held together without it getting complicated
  • A lace pattern with only two rounds to remember
  • A deep V-neck with decreases you can follow as you go
  • Puff sleeves with no sleeve cap to set in
  • A detail at the back that nobody else sees at first
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF), built for the phone
  • Twelve steps with tick-off boxes along the way
  • Cosy Cues with technical tips throughout the pattern
  • Video links for the stretchy cast-on, joining sleeves to body, raglan and puff sleeve
  • All five sizes in the same file
  • Print section and notes page at the back
  • The pattern in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English and German
The story behind the design

The Scientist is a series, not one garment. The same framework, new colours, new yarn. Ocean Edition is the blue one — Karisma in blue turquoise with a silver thread alongside, so the surface shimmers without turning metallic.

The lace pattern sits only in the lower part of the body. Above it the stockinette runs calmly towards the shoulder, and the eyelets come back as a band over the shoulder when the pieces are joined. The neck gets an eyelet border at the back only — it is the back that gets the detail.

The name comes from the Coldplay song The Scientist.

Sizes

XS (S) M (L) XL

Length 53 (60) 66 (71) 77 cm
Width, flat 42 (46) 51 (54) 58 cm
Sleeve length 44 (46) 48 (50) 52 cm
Sleeve width 26 cm

The width is half the circumference, measured flat. The length grades steeply because the body grades 4 cm per size — if you want it shorter, shorten the stockinette section of the body.

Yarn & equipment

Recommended yarn

  • Drops Karisma, 60 Blåturkis: 5 (5) 6 (7) 8 balls
  • Lammy Lurex, Silver: 1 (1) 2 (2) 2 balls

Body and cuffs with two yarns held together, the sleeves in single Karisma.

You also need

  • Circular needle no. 7: 80 cm for the body, 40 cm for the sleeves
  • 5 stitch markers
  • Scissors, darning needle and tape measure
Gauge

Two yarns held together: 13 stitches × 18 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on needle no. 7.

Single yarn: 17 stitches × 24 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on needle no. 7.

Knit a swatch in both, and measure before and after washing.

Construction

The sweater is knitted bottom-up. The body starts with ribbing and a 50-round lace section, is divided for the V-neck and continues in stockinette to the armhole. The sleeves are knitted separately with a double cuff and single yarn in the sleeve itself, and are put onto the body. The yoke opens with 10 rounds of lace pattern over all pieces, before the raglan and V-neck are decreased at the same time. Finally the sleeves are gathered into a puff, and the neck is finished with an eyelet border at the back only.

What you learn
  • Two yarns held together
  • Lace pattern in the round
  • V-neck with decreases
  • Raglan decreases
  • Puff sleeve reduction
  • Eyelet border as a finish

How the yarn feels

Karisma on its own is pure wool. With lurex alongside, the surface becomes lighter and gets a shimmer that does not take over. The cuffs in two yarns held together give weight at the wrist and hold their shape better than the sleeve above.

Part of The Scientist

The series where the same framework gets new colours and new yarns. Ocean Edition is the blue one. Woods Edition is the same sweater in Puno chocolate.
