Scientist – The Beach
Level: Beginner plus · XS–XL
An airy sweater in one colour. Lace pattern over the whole body, an open eyelet column on each side, plain sleeves with long cuffs and a wide boat neck.
Camel. Lace. Calm.
Styling
The boat neck sits out towards the shoulder and suits a necklace or nothing at all. Camel goes with everything you already own — it is the colour that makes the rest of your wardrobe easier, not harder.

The story behind the design
The Scientist is a series, not one garment. Same framework, new colours, new yarn. The Beach is the camel one — Puno in one colour, without contrast, without stripes.
The whole body is in lace pattern. The sleeves are completely plain. That is the whole design idea: texture against calm. Two surfaces that each do their own job, and that meet at the raglan without mixing.
On each side there is a narrow, open eyelet column from the ribbing up to the armhole. It gives the garment a clear side line and a little extra drape.
The name comes from the Coldplay song The Scientist.

Yarn & equipment
Recommended yarn
- Puno – Rauma Garn, colour camel: 5 (6) 6 (7) 7 balls of 50 g
Alpaca, merino and polyamide. The whole garment in single yarn.
You also need
- Circular needle no. 7: 80 cm for the body, 40 cm for the yoke
- Double-pointed needles or short circular needle no. 5 for the cuffs
- 6 stitch markers
- Darning needle and tape measure
Gauge
Lace pattern: 13 stitches × 18 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on needle no. 7.
Stockinette: 14 stitches × 18 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on needle no. 7.
The swatch is knitted in the lace pattern — that is what decides the width.
Construction
The sweater is knitted bottom-up. The body starts with ribbing, is divided into four with two eyelet columns at the sides and two lace panels in between, and goes straight up to the armhole. The sleeves are knitted separately with a long cuff on needle 5 and one increase round on needle 7. Body and sleeves are joined into one raglan yoke, where the body continues in lace pattern and the sleeves in stockinette. Finally the sleeves are gathered into a puff, and the sweater is finished with a wide boat neck in ribbing.

Yarn feel
Puno is light and airy. The lace pattern makes the fabric lighter still, and the plain sleeves keep the look calm. The yarn settles beautifully after steaming, and only then do the eyelets open up.
Part of The Scientist
The series where the same framework gets new colours and new yarns. The Beach is the camel one. Ocean Edition is the blue one.
