Anna's Easy Beanie

Cabin at Midnight · A Head Full of Dreams · Level: Beginner

The simplest beanie in the series. No circular needle, no decreases, no pattern repeat to keep track of – just knit back and forth over 50 stitches until the square is done. The colours go from earth to night, with a gold thread glinting through the middle section.

Dark. Glittering. Seventies.

Styling

The shape is taken from the seventies – the tall, soft beanie that sat a little towards the back of the head. It is soft and giving, with a small pinch at the top. The beanie belongs with Camel, the other beanie in Cabin at Midnight, and the two can be knitted as a pair.

Perfect if you want
  • Your very first beanie – no decreases and no circular needle
  • A project that is finished in an evening or two
  • A way to use up two small leftover balls
  • Gold thread that glints without taking over
  • A seventies shape that sits high
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF) in mobile format, in five languages
  • One step per page with a tick-off box

The story behind the design

Natural white it is not – here it goes the other way. Brown and blue held together at the bottom, then a gold thread through the middle, and at the top pure polar night. The square is sewn together at the centre back and gathered at the top. Anyone who has never knitted a beanie before can manage this one.

Cabin at Midnight

Cabin at Midnight is the collection for the dark hours – warm colours, simple shapes and garments that belong in the winter landscape.

A Head Full of Dreams

A Head Full of Dreams is a collection inspired by dreams, colour and hope. The designs are made to keep both your head and your thoughts warm – with soft materials, strong colours and a playful look. These are garments that remind you to dream big, create freely and never give up. The beanie series has its starting point in the collection CosyMonday designed for Odd Molly.

Tjukk Mohair – Rauma Garn, two strands.

091 Polarnatt: 2 balls
080 Brun: 1 ball
Concorde gold thread: 1 spool

Notions

  • Darning needle with a large eye
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
Gauge

10 stitches × 20 rows = 10 × 10 cm in garter stitch on needle 9 with two strands. 2 rows = 1 garter ridge.

Construction

The beanie is knitted flat as a square, 50 stitches wide and 50 rows high. The 50 stitches become the circumference, not the height. First 20 rows in brown and blue, then 14 rows with gold thread, a transition ridge, 8 rows of pure polar night and 6 rows of stockinette at the top. There is no bind-off – the live stitches are gathered together once the square has been sewn together at the centre back.

What you learn
  • Stretchy cast-on
  • Garter stitch
  • Holding several strands together
  • Zigzag stitch
  • Gathering a crown
