Charlie Brown – The Poncho

Adventure of a Lifetime · Level: Beginner

A poncho in stockinette with two open eyelet columns running straight down the centre front and centre back, fringe at the bottom and a collar that buttons on. The collar can be removed, and that is what makes the poncho work all year — with it in winter, without it in autumn and spring.

Chestnut. Easy to move in. All year.

Styling

Over a thin sweater or a shirt, with the collar on when it bites. Take the collar off, and you are left with a wide, soft poncho with a round neckline that suits both a dress and jeans.

Perfect if you want
  • One garment that covers autumn, winter and spring
  • Lace without a chart — two rounds that are repeated
  • A big garment with very little shaping
  • To try buttonholes for the first time, in a place where it is not critical
  • A project you can make shorter or longer yourself
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF) in mobile format
  • One step per page, with a tick box
  • Video links for the techniques along the way
  • Two options: without the collar, and a separate section on changing the length
  • A4 print sheets with the whole pattern, and a notes page
The story behind the design

Charlie Brown is the poncho I have made the most times, and the only one that has never been quite the same twice. It is built on one idea: the collar should be removable. The yarn overs are not hidden away here — they sit as two open eyelet columns at the centre front and centre back, and show how the poncho is built while you knit it.

The design is older than the name CosyMonday. The brand was once called Ponchogirl, and it was the ponchos that started it all — they were the first thing I made, and what people came back for. Charlie Brown is from that time.

The name comes from the Coldplay song Charlie Brown.

Adventure of a Lifetime

Adventure of a Lifetime is CosyMonday's poncho collection, and the one that goes furthest back. Soft, bohemian, easy to move in and effortless — garments you throw on, and that move with you instead of staying put.

Construction

The poncho is knitted top-down, in the round on a circular needle, in two parts. The poncho itself starts at the neckline with a narrow garter edge, and is increased from two centre stitches — one at the centre front and one at the centre back. The yarn overs are knitted open, so the increases become two visible eyelet columns. At the bottom comes an eyelet border and 10 cm of fringe. The collar is knitted as a separate piece in ribbing, with buttonholes along the lower edge, and buttons onto buttons sewn around the neckline.

What you learn
  • Stretchy cast-on
  • Garter stitch in the round
  • Working with stitch markers
  • Open yarn-over increases that become a lace pattern
  • Eyelet border and fringe
  • Buttonholes in ribbing
  • Loose bind-off
