Don't Panic – The Poncho

Level: Beginner plus · One Size

A poncho for the days when everything is a bit much. No sleeves to put your arms into, no buttons, nothing that has to sit just right. Just rib, a hood that can just as well lie down as a collar, and fringes that do the rest.

Calm. Roomy. Finished when you say it is.

Styling

Wear it over a simple top and a pair of wide trousers when you want the garment to do the work. Let the hood lie down at the back and it becomes a collar instead — the same garment, two completely different looks.

Perfect if you want
  • A garment you can put on without thinking
  • A pattern you can put down in the middle of a round and find your place again
  • Rib that does not curl and needs no counting
  • To decide the length yourself, as you go
  • Hood and fringes in the same garment
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF), built for your phone
  • Fifteen steps with tick-off boxes along the way
  • Cosy Cues with technical tips throughout the pattern
  • Video links for stretchy cast-on, stitch markers and lace pattern
  • Print section and notes page at the back
  • The pattern in Norwegian, English, Swedish, Danish and German
The story behind the design

Some garments are made to impress. This one is made to be there. The poncho is knitted in the round and top-down, with not a single place where you can go wrong in a way that cannot be fixed. The hood comes at the end, and the fringes last of all — when the rest is done and you just want to sit and do something with your hands.

Size

One Size

  • Length from neck to eyelet border: approx. 55 cm
  • Fringes: approx. 8 cm extra
  • Hood height: approx. 32 cm

You decide the length yourself. The pattern tells you how to measure as you go and where to stop.

Yarn & equipment

Recommended yarn

Puno – Rauma Garn

  • Approx. 10 balls for poncho and hood
  • Approx. 3 extra balls for the fringes

The fringes turn out fuller and tangle less in Puno than in mohair. Leftover yarn from Garnspesialisten works well for the fringes.

Needles & accessories

  • Circular needle 7 mm – long and short
  • Crochet hook
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Darning needle, scissors and tape measure
  • 2 buttons and 2 pompoms, if you want a cord in the hood
Gauge

12 stitches × 17 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on 7 mm needles. If you knit more loosely, go down to 6 mm. If you knit more tightly, go up to 8 mm.

Construction

The poncho is knitted in the round, top-down, in rib. It is increased out from two centre stitches, so it falls in points at the front and back. At the bottom the rib turns into a row of knitted popcorns and an eyelet border that the fringes are attached to.

The hood is picked up along the neck edge at the end and knitted back and forth in stockinette, with an i-cord edge around the opening.

What you learn
  • Stretchy cast-on
  • Increasing with yarn overs from a centre stitch
  • Knitted popcorns
  • Eyelet border
  • Knitting a hood
  • I-cord edge
  • Fringes
