Le Rouge

Always In · Level: Beginner plus

A light mohair sweater in two colours: deep berry red in the body and sleeves, light peach in the whole yoke. Lace pattern, three-quarter puff sleeves and a wide boat neck. Knitted bottom-up.

Warm. Airy. Feminine.

The story behind the design

Le Rouge is the same sweater as Le Lilac – and so the same construction as Woods – Always in My Head. The difference is the colours.

Body and sleeves in Berrylicious, a deep berry red that leans towards rust in sunlight. The whole yoke in Peach cream, the lightest peach in the series. The change sits exactly where the lace pattern starts, so the light section and the texture arrive at the same time — and the eyelets show best in the light colour.

The name of the original comes from the Coldplay song Always in My Head.

Sizes

XS (S) M (L) XL

Chest width, half 42 (46) 50 (54) 58 cm
Length 49 (55) 60 (67) 72 cm
Armhole depth 21 (23) 24 (27) 28 cm
Underarm sleeve length 25 cm, all sizes
Sleeve width 43 cm, all sizes
Neck opening 42 (45) 48 (52) 55 cm

The armhole depth is also the height of the light section – the whole yoke is knitted in Peach cream.

The sleeve is the same in all sizes. It is the armhole depth that grows.

Yarn & equipment

Yarn – both colours are Fluff from HipKnitShop

  • Body and sleeves, Berrylicious: 6 (6) 7 (7) 8 balls
  • The yoke, Peach cream: 3 (3) 3 (3) 4 balls

Fluff is 50 g = 100 m. Buy both colours from the same dye lot – the change is visible, and both sides of it should be even.

Needles

  • Circular needle 7 mm, 80 cm for the body
  • Circular needle 7 mm, 40 cm for the sleeves

You will also need
5 stitch markers, scissors, darning needle, tape measure

Gauge

12 stitches × 17 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on a 7 mm needle.

If you knit more loosely, go down to needle 6. If you knit more tightly, go up to needle 8.

Construction

The body is knitted bottom-up in the round, in stockinette, in Berrylicious. The sleeves are knitted separately, also in Berrylicious.

When all three pieces are on the same needle, the colour is changed to Peach cream and the yoke is knitted — this is where the lace pattern and the raglan decreases run at the same time. The sleeves are gathered into a puff at the very end.

The lace pattern is on the body only. The sleeves are stockinette all the way.
