Midnight Star · Puno Edition
Midnight · Level: Beginner
The Puno edition of Midnight Star, knitted in black alpaca on 7 mm needles. The eyelet row sits low over the chest, and the sleeves are twice as wide as the cuff all the way up to the neck, where they are gathered into a puff. Round neck edge in twisted ribbing, no high neck.
Black. Airy. Puffed.
Styling
The body is short, so the sweater suits something high-waisted — wide trousers, a long skirt or high-waisted jeans. The long cuffs can be folded up or left down over the hand. Black alpaca against light colours gives it the most contrast.

The story behind the design
Black yarn does not take in light. It holds on to it. The garment hung in a tree with snow around it, and the only thing that let the daylight through was the eyelet row over the chest. The sleeve is twice as wide as the cuff — the stitch count is doubled in one round just above the ribbing, and the volume is not gathered in again until right up at the neck.

Construction
The sweater is knitted bottom-up. The body is knitted in the round to the armholes, the sleeves separately from a long cuff that is increased to double the stitch count, and the pieces are joined into one. The raglan decreases take only body stitches, so the sleeves keep their width all the way up. Finally each sleeve is gathered in two rounds — that is the puff — and the neck edge is knitted in twisted ribbing.
What you learn
- Stretchy cast-on
- Twisted ribbing
- Increasing to double sleeve width
- Raglan decreases on the body only
- Eyelet row with yarn overs
- Puff sleeve gathered at the neck
