Miss Buttercup – The Sweater
Paradise · Level: Beginner plus
A wide sweater in natural with a border of small yellow flowers over the hips. The flowers are knitted in, and the stems are embroidered on at the end in duplicate stitch. The neck is high in gold and cream and can be folded double, the sleeves wide with a yellow edge at the bottom.
Wide. Light. Flowery.
Styling
Fold the neck double for everyday wear, let it stand high when it is cold. The sweater is wide enough to be worn over a shirt.
The flower border sits over the hips, not over the chest. It comes into its own when the sweater is allowed to hang loose — don't tuck it into your trousers.
Perfect if you want
- A flower border that is easy to knit in — two colours, never more than five stitches at a time
- To learn duplicate stitch, the embroidery that follows the stitch already there
- A high collar in two strands that can be folded double without pulling
- Raglan that decreases only on the body, with no seams at the shoulder
- A puff sleeve made from two simple halvings
What you get
- 26 pages built for your phone — one step per page, no scrolling with yarn in your hands
- 13 steps with tick-off boxes you can check as you knit
- All five sizes in the same file, with the size in front of every number
- A separate chart of the flower repeat, with colour key and repeat view
- Cosy Cues with tips where they are needed
- Clickable video links for cast-on and duplicate stitch
- A4 print section with the whole pattern and all the numbers
- Lined notes page
- Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English and German
The story behind the design
Miss Buttercup began with the flower border. Small yellow heads in a row over the hips, and green stems embroidered on afterwards so they could stand a little unevenly — the way they do outside.
The rest of the sweater makes room for the border. The body is calm and natural, the sleeves wide and fuzzy, and all the yellow is gathered in the neck and the sleeve edge. Two places, far apart, that keep the eye moving.
The split in the ribbing came because the sweater needed to be able to stand open over the hips. That is what lets the border lie straight.
Paradise
Paradise is CosyMonday's embroidery collection — the garments where the needle comes out after the knitting needles have been put away. Miss Buttercup is the one with the meadow around the hips.

Yarn & equipment
Yarn
Main colour in natural for the body. The sleeves are knitted with mohair and alpaca held together. Yellow for the flowers and the sleeve edge. The neck is knitted with gold and cream held together, one strand of each. A scrap of green for the stems.
You need:
Main colour XS 5 · S 6 · M 6 · L 7 · XL 7 balls
Mohair XS 3 · S 3 · M 4 · L 4 · XL 5 balls
Alpaca XS 3 · S 3 · M 4 · L 4 · XL 5 balls
Yellow XS 1 · S 1 · M 2 · L 2 · XL 2 balls
Needles
Circular needle 7 mm, 80 and 40 cm · double-pointed needles 7 mm
Accessories
Five stitch markers · darning needle · tape measure
Gauge
12 stitches and 17 rounds stockinette = 10 × 10 cm on 7 mm needles.
Measure the swatch flat, without stretching it. It is a good idea to knit a swatch with the yarn held double too — the sleeves need to match the gauge of the body.
Construction
The sweater is knitted bottom-up, in the round on a circular needle. At the bottom comes a ribbing that starts split, so it gets a slit at each side.
Over the hips sits the flower border: a repeat of 10 stitches and 13 rounds, repeated all the way around. The flower head is knitted in yellow, and the stems are embroidered on at the end.
The sleeves are knitted separately with a yellow edge at the bottom, and then joined to the body on one needle. The raglan decreases only on the body — the sleeves keep all their stitches until the end, and are then halved twice into a puff. Finally a high collar in ribbing, knitted with gold and cream held together.
What you learn
- Split ribbing knitted back and forth
- Knitting in small motifs with two colours
- Duplicate stitch embroidered on finished knitting
- Raglan that decreases only on the body
- Puff sleeve made from two halvings
