Springtime – Always In My Head

Always In · Level: Beginner plus

An airy raglan sweater in Tjukk Mohair. The body and sleeves in one colour, and all the colour play gathered in the yoke: a popcorn round, two-colour lice stitch and soft transitions from turquoise to pink, green and off-white. Knitted bottom-up.

Dreamy. Airy. A little playful.

The story behind the design

Springtime is spring in winter. The sweater was photographed in snow, with fairy lights in the tree, and that is exactly where it belongs — turquoise like ice at the bottom, and a spring breaking through at the top.

The body is one colour all the way. Everything happens in the yoke: a popcorn round where turquoise meets pink, two-colour lice stitch, and then green and off-white settling in layers up towards the neck.

The name comes from the Coldplay song Always in My Head.

Sizes

XS (S) M (L) XL

Chest width 87 (93) 100 (107) 113 cm
Length 58 (60) 62 (64) 66 cm
Sleeve length 55 (57) 59 (61) 64 cm
Yoke depth 17 (19) 20 (21) 23 cm
Neck width 53 (57) 60 (63) 67 cm

The sweater is meant to fit loosely. Choose the size that is 15–20 cm above your own chest measurement. The sleeve length is measured from the neck edge, along the raglan and down to the cuff.

Yarn & equipment

Yarn

  • Tjukk Mohair – Rauma Garn in four colours: 003 Myrull, 316 Lys rosa, 312 Blågrønn and 086 Spiregrønn
  • In total 10 (11) 12 (13) 15 balls. 50 g = 100 m
  • The turquoise takes the most — it goes into the whole body and both sleeves. The other three are used only in the yoke, and there one ball of each is enough in most sizes
  • Alternative: Påfugl in Paris – House of Yarn in off-white, pink, turquoise and light green

Needles

  • Circular needle 7 mm, 80 cm for the body and yoke
  • Circular needle 7 mm, 40 cm for the sleeves

You will also need
5 stitch markers, scissors, darning needle, tape measure

Gauge

12 stitches × 15 rounds = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette on 7 mm needles.

If you knit more loosely, go down to 6 mm needles. If you knit more tightly, go up to 8 mm needles.

Construction

The body is knitted bottom-up in the round, as one tube. The sleeves are knitted separately, straight up, without increases. Then all three pieces are put on the same needle, and the yoke is knitted with raglan decreases all the way up to the neck.

The popcorn round is on round 2 of the yoke, right where turquoise meets pink. From there the colours go up in layers towards the neck, while the raglan decreases follow their steady rhythm every other round.

Perfect for leftover yarn

The steps count rounds, and a separate stripe sheet at the back tells you which yarn. Because the colours are only in the top 26 to 34 rounds, you can swap the whole colour scheme for leftover yarn without changing a single instruction.
