The Flip Flop Dress – Bandeau Edition
Always Loveable Collection · Level: Beginner plus
Part of Always Loveable Collection. A long, strapless dress knitted in leftover yarn – thirteen stripes in five completely different yarn qualities, put together from single balls that did not belong to anything. The dress grows from 30 to 50 cm in width all by itself, without a single increase, because silk and mohair knit up looser than wool and cotton on the same needle.
Raw. Light. Made from what was there.
Styling
Over a bikini on the beach, or with a light knitted cardigan on top when evening comes. The black choker and the three buttons belong to the dress and give it a raw, slightly unfinished look.

The story behind the design
The dress began in a bag of leftovers – single balls from Garnspesialisten that did not belong to anything, in five completely different qualities. The yarn in the original is sold out, and that is the whole point: the pattern is written so that it does not care which yarn you have. The steps only count rounds, and the stripe sheet tells you when to change. You can swap out the entire colour scheme without changing a single instruction.

Yarn & equipment
Leftover yarn in five qualities, approx.:
Gaita – approx. 50 m
Wool – approx. 35 m
Cotton – approx. 35 m
Thin mohair – approx. 260 m
Silk – approx. 600 m
The yarn in the original came from Garnspesialisten and is sold out. That is intentional – this is a leftover-yarn dress. Use what you have lying around and match the gauge, not the yarn name. The more different the qualities are, the clearer the stripes become.
Needles and notions
- Circular needle 6 mm, 80 cm
- Crochet hook no. 5
- A little black yarn for the choker
- One button approx. 2,5 cm and two smaller decorative buttons
- Darning needle, scissors, tape measure
Gauge
20 rounds = 10 cm in stockinette on needle 6 mm.
The rounds are what must be right. The stitches vary with the yarn – from 19 stitches per 10 cm in the firmer qualities to 11–12 in the silk. That very difference is what gives the dress its width.
Construction
The dress is knitted in the round top-down, in stockinette all the way. 115 stitches are cast on, and the stitch count stays the same until you bind off at the bottom – no increases, no decreases.
Thirteen stripes in five yarn qualities, 224 rounds in total. The top part changes yarn every three to four centimetres, while the two large sections at the bottom are 30 cm each.
Finished with a crocheted edge across the front, a black choker and three buttons.
About the pattern
The pattern has its own stripe sheet at the back, where all the stripes are listed in the order you meet them, with round counts and a box to tick. The steps only count rounds – the stripe sheet tells you which yarn. That means you can put the work down for weeks and still know exactly where you are.
