The Mittens
Level: Beginner plus
Mitten in mock cable with a long folded cuff, knitted in the round with mohair and silver thread together. The cable looks as though stitches are crossed, but they are not — and you need no cable needle. The silver settles in the crossings and stays there.
Knæsj rosa. Silver. Cold morning.
Styling
With anything black. The cuff is long and can be folded back or pulled up over a coat sleeve.
Perfect if you want
A small project that looks harder than it is. The cable is mock, so you skip the cable needle and the crossings — and still the columns stand all the way up.
What you get
A mobile-friendly PDF with one step per page and tick boxes along the way, all five sizes in the same file, and an A4 print section at the back with tables for all sizes and a lined notes page.
The pattern is available in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English and German. Choose your language in the drop-down.
The story behind the design
Mittens are the smallest garment that gets to be the most.
Nobody buys a neon pink sweater. But neon pink mittens with silver thread in them — those you put on without thinking twice, and they are the first thing people see when you raise your hand.
Concorde is fine enough that it does not change the gauge. It just comes along and catches the light in the crossings.
Size
Five sizes: XS (S) M (L) XL.
Circumference: 15.6 (18.8) 21.9 (25) 28.1 cm.
Fits hand circumference: 16.6 (19.8) 22.9 (26) 29.1 cm.
Total length: 22.3 (24.5) 26.8 (29.1) 31.4 cm.
Cuff: 6.8 (7.7) 8.6 (9.5) 10.5 cm.
The ribbing draws in, so the mitten fits closer than the measurement suggests.
Yarn & equipment
Tjukk Mohair (Rauma Garn) 106 knæsj rosa, knitted together with Concorde silver. 50 g Tjukk Mohair = 100 m.
You need 1 (1) 2 (2) 2 balls Tjukk Mohair and 1 ball Concorde.
Double-pointed needles 5 mm, marker, darning needle and a length of waste yarn for the thumb.
Gauge
16 stitches and 22 rounds in the cable pattern = 10 × 10 cm on 5 mm needles, with both strands.
Construction
Knitted in the round on double-pointed needles, bottom-up. First the cuff in ribbing with a purl round as fold line, then the cable pattern up to the thumb, on to the top shaping, and finally the thumb.
The whole mitten follows the same 5-stitch repeat: twisted knit 3, purl 2. The top shaping follows the pattern, so the columns run all the way to the top.
What you learn
Stretchy cast-on · mock cable knitted in the round · folded edge with a purl round · thumb placed on waste yarn · top shaping that follows the pattern.
