Winter Flags – The Poncho
Level: Beginner · One Size
The natural white version of Flags. The same rib and the same high neck, but without fringe — the popcorns have moved right out to the edge, and that is all it takes.
One piece. No sleeves. No making up.
Styling
Natural white keeps it bright all winter. Let the neck stand up outdoors and fold it down indoors. Without fringe it also lies flat enough to wear under a jacket.
Perfect if you want
- A poncho without fringe that can be worn under an outdoor jacket
- Rib that does not curl and needs no counting
- To decide the length yourself, as you go
- A quicker project than Flags — the fringe is the time-consuming part
- A pattern you can put down mid-round and find your place again
What you get
- Digital knitting pattern (PDF), built for your phone
- Eight steps with tick boxes along the way
- Cosy Cues with technical tips throughout the pattern
- Video links for stretchy cast-on, stitch markers and popcorns
- Print section and notes page at the back
- The pattern in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English and German
The story behind the design
Winter Flags is the same poncho as Flags, stripped down to the shape. The fringe and the eyelet border are gone, and the popcorns have moved right out to the edge. What is left are the points and the two increase lines — and in natural white that is enough.
Without fringe it is also quicker to knit, and easier to wear under a jacket.

Yarn & equipment
Recommended yarn
Puno – Rauma Garn, shade 811 natur
- Approx. 10 balls of 50 g for the whole poncho
- Circular needle 7 mm
You also need
- Circular needle 7 mm, short and 80–100 cm
- 2 stitch markers
- Darning needle, scissors and tape measure
Gauge
14 stitches × 17 rounds in rib = 10 × 10 cm on 7 mm needles. If you knit loosely, go down to 6 mm. If you knit tightly, go up to 8 mm.
Construction
The poncho is knitted in the round, top-down, in rib. It starts with the high neck and is then increased from two centre stitches, so it falls in points at the front and back. At the bottom comes a round of knitted popcorns, four rounds of rib and a loose bind-off — no eyelet border and no fringe.
What you learn
- Stretchy cast-on
- Rib in the round
- Increasing with yarn overs from a centre stitch
- Knitted popcorns
- Loose bind-off
