Hot pink isn't a colour you end up with by accident. It's one you choose.

The most common thing I hear when someone is choosing yarn is that they take the muted colour to be on the safe side. Then the sweater just lies there, because it never became anything.
A strong colour is actually the safer route. You know straight away whether you like it, and you wear the garment accordingly.
Smellroses can carry the colour because the shape is calm: raglan, puff sleeves, no stripes, no embroidery. One thing is happening, and that's pink.
The lace pattern works for the colour too. A completely solid surface in hot pink is a lot. When the light comes through, the colour breaks up and becomes easier to wear.
If you're unsure, knit the swatch in the colour you're afraid of, and leave it on the kitchen counter for a week. Either you walk past and like it every time, or you don't. Then you have your answer before you've bought ten balls.
