Level guide – which pattern is right for you?

All my patterns are marked with a level, so you can find something that suits where you are right now. Three steps, and they mean the same thing every time.

1 – Beginner

You can knit and purl. That is enough.

The pattern has clear steps and little or no making up. You meet few new techniques, and the ones that turn up are explained as you go. Scarves, simple hats and straight jumpers live here.

If you have never knitted a garment before, this is where to start.

2 – Beginner plus

You have the basics down and want to learn something new.

Here you meet raglan decreases, lace patterns, half brioche and simple textures. One new thing at a time, never five.

This is the level most of my patterns sit at. If you are unsure whether you are ready, you probably are — and if you get stuck, the technique is explained with video in Knittipedia.

3 – Lightly experienced

You are comfortable with increases, decreases and more advanced techniques.

Here several techniques are combined in the same garment — knitting and crochet together, embroidery on knitting, or constructions that ask you to keep track of a few things at once.

What the level does not tell you

Level is about technique, not about time. A beginner pattern in fine mohair can take longer than a «beginner plus» in chunky yarn.

It says nothing about how good the result will look either. That comes down to the yarn and to your gauge — not to how difficult the pattern is.
