Three stitches. If you can do these, you can knit just about anything I design — the rest is combinations of them.
Knit stitch
The most common stitch of all. Worked into the front of the stitch, and it gives you the smooth side you see on the outside of a stocking stitch garment.
Knit through back loop
The same stitch, but worked into the back of the loop. It comes out tighter and tidier, and is often used in ribbing to give a sharper edge.
Purl stitch
The back of the knit stitch. Alternate knit and purl and you get ribbing, garter stitch, moss stitch — all the texture comes from here.
