Flags – The Poncho

Level: Beginner · One Size

A poncho in rib with a high neck, a row of knitted popcorns at the bottom and long fringes. Two increase lines pull the edge down into points at the front and back — and they move independently of each other when you walk.

One piece. No sleeves. No making up.

Styling

Let the neck stand up outdoors and fold it down indoors. Over a simple dress or straight onto a thin sweater, with tall boots — the poncho does the rest by itself.

Perfect if you want
  • A layering garment for the cold months, not just the in-between seasons
  • Rib that does not curl and needs no counting
  • To decide the length yourself, as you go
  • A garment with no sleeves, buttons or fit to worry about
  • A pattern you can put down in the middle of a round and find your place again
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF), built for your phone
  • Nine steps with tick-off boxes along the way
  • Cosy Cues with technical tips throughout the pattern
  • Video links for stretchy cast-on, stitch markers, popcorns and lace pattern
  • Print section and notes page at the back
  • The pattern in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English and German
The story behind the design

The poncho has two increase lines, one at the front and one at the back. They pull the lower edge down into two points, and when you walk, the points move independently of each other — like pennants in the wind. That is where the name came from.

The rest is as simple as it gets: knit 1, purl 1 all the way, and two yarn overs every other round. The popcorns and fringes at the bottom are the only things that take a little time, and they come at the very end.

Yarn & equipment

Recommended yarn

Puno – Rauma Garn, colour dark petrol

  • Approx. 12 balls of 50 g for the whole poncho
  • Of this, approx. 2 balls go to the fringes
  • Circular needle 7 mm

Leftover yarn from Garnspesialisten works well for the fringes.

You also need

  • Circular needle 7 mm, short and 80–100 cm
  • Crochet hook
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Darning needle, scissors and tape measure
Gauge

14 stitches × 17 rounds in rib = 10 × 10 cm on 7 mm needles. If you knit more loosely, go down to 6 mm. If you knit more tightly, go up to 8 mm.

Construction

The poncho is knitted in the round, top-down, in rib. It starts with the high neck and is then increased out from two centre stitches, so it falls in points at the front and back. At the bottom the rib turns into a row of knitted popcorns and an eyelet border that the fringes are attached to.

What you learn
  • Stretchy cast-on
  • Rib in the round
  • Increasing with yarn overs from a centre stitch
  • Knitted popcorns
  • Eyelet border
  • Fringes
