I Want Something Just Like This – The High Neck

Level: Beginner · One Size

The summer poncho that has moved into winter. The same rib, the same popcorns and fringe at the bottom — but the neck is knitted 22 cm high, so it can stand up against the wind or be folded double when it really bites.

One piece. No sleeves. Nothing that has to fit just right.

Styling

Let the neck stand up outdoors and fold it double indoors. The same garment, two completely different looks. Over a simple top and a pair of wide trousers the poncho does the rest of the work itself.

Perfect if you want
  • A poncho you can wear when it is cold, not just between seasons
  • Rib that does not curl and needs no counting
  • To decide the length yourself, as you go
  • A garment with no sleeves, buttons or fit to worry about
  • A pattern you can put down mid-round and find your place again
What you get
  • Digital knitting pattern (PDF), built for your phone
  • Ten steps with tick boxes along the way
  • Cosy Cues with technical tips throughout the pattern
  • Video links for stretchy cast-on, stitch markers and lace pattern
  • Print section and notes page at the back
  • The pattern in Norwegian, English, Swedish, Danish and German
The story behind the design

The first Just Like This was a summer poncho. Wide neck, light yarn, something to throw over your swimwear on the jetty. This is the same poncho, but with a neck that actually keeps the wind out. Everything else is untouched — rib all the way, popcorns and fringe at the bottom, no sleeves to deal with.

Part of Adventure of a Lifetime

Yarn & equipment

Recommended yarn

Puno – Rauma Garn, shade 811 natur

  • Approx. 500 g for the whole poncho
  • Of this, approx. 100 g goes to the fringe
  • Circular needle 7 mm

If you want the heathered look

Hip Wool – HipknitShop, shade Tutti Frutti — bright flecks on a natural white base.

  • Approx. 14 balls
  • Circular needle 8 mm, which gives the same gauge

Leftover yarn from Garnspesialisten works well for the fringe.

You also need

  • Circular needle 40 and 80 cm
  • Crochet hook
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Darning needle, scissors and tape measure
Gauge

14 stitches × 17 rounds = 10 × 10 cm on 7 mm needles. If you knit loosely, go down to 6 mm. If you knit tightly, go up to 8 mm.

Construction

The poncho is knitted in the round, top-down, in rib. It starts with the high neck and is then increased from two centre stitches, so it falls in points at the front and back. At the bottom the rib turns into a round of knitted popcorns and an eyelet border that the fringe is attached to.

What you learn
  • Stretchy cast-on
  • Rib in the round
  • Increasing with yarn overs from a centre stitch
  • Knitted popcorns
  • Eyelet border
  • Fringe
