Kina – The Coat
Coloratura · Level: Beginner plus
Kina is the coat where the colour stays calm and the texture does the talking. Army-green mohair all the way, with popcorns along the hem, half fisherman's rib in the sleeves and garter ridges in the body – three surfaces in the same colour, each catching the light in its own way. Long enough to fall calmly, and still almost weightless.
Texture. Calm. Green.
Styling
The coat is long and falls straight, so it suits slim trousers and a simple top underneath. Button the top button and leave the rest open, or button both and let the coat sit close to the neck on cold days. The cuff buttons let you fold the sleeves up without them slipping down again.
Perfect if you want
- A long coat that is warm without being heavy
- A garment where the texture carries the design, not colour changes
- To try popcorns and half fisherman's rib in the same project
- Puff sleeves with a clear shape
- A pattern where each size has its own numbers

The story behind the design
The Coloratura series is about colour. Kina turns that around: one colour all the way, so the texture has to carry the garment alone. The popcorn row gives weight at the bottom, the half fisherman's rib gives the sleeves volume, and the garter ridges in the body keep the rest calm. The name comes from the Coldplay song Coloratura.
Coloratura
Coloratura is CosyMonday's colourful series, where strong colour combinations and playful details take centre stage. The designs are made for you who want to stand out in a garment full of personality.

Leftovers from Garnspesialisten also work well here – go by the gauge, not the yarn name.
Needles
Circular needle 7 mm, short and long
Double-pointed needles 7 mm
Circular needle 5 mm for the cuffs
Crochet hook 7 mm
Notions
4 buttons, 2–2,5 cm
Stitch markers · darning needle · tape measure
Gauge
14 stitches × 24 rows garter stitch = 10 × 10 cm on needle 7 mm with two strands.
The half fisherman's rib in the sleeves is denser: 20 rounds = 10 cm.
Construction
The coat is knitted in one piece bottom-up, back and forth on a circular needle. The garter edge is finished with a popcorn row that goes all the way around, and then the body continues in garter stitch to the armholes. The sleeves are knitted separately in half fisherman's rib from the cuff up, and joined to the body on one needle. The raglan is decreased only on the body, so the sleeves keep their width – that is what gives the puff when the sleeve is halved twice at the top. Finally the neck is knitted in ribbing, and buttons and loops are added.
What you learn
Garter stitch back and forth · popcorns knitted straight into the work · half fisherman's rib · raglan decreases on the body only · puff sleeves by halving the sleeve twice · crocheted button loops
