The story behind the design

When I Need A Friend was designed as a quiet protest against the war in Ukraine. The sweater is a tribute to peace, hope and community, and a reminder of how important it is to look after each other. The hand-embroidered details stand for care, while the leftover yarn gives new life to materials that already exist.

Creative

Creative is CosyMonday's collection for you who like experimenting with colour, texture and personal expression. No two garments here are quite the same – creativity and individuality come first.

Free pattern

This pattern is free. If you would like to support the work for a safer future, you can give whatever you want to Norsk Folkehjelp and their mine clearance work in Ukraine.

Construction

The sweater is knitted from the bottom up. Body and sleeves are knitted separately before they are joined and shaped with raglan decreases. Finally you embroider the text and the flowers by hand, which makes every sweater one of a kind.

About the pattern

You should know knit stitches, purl stitches, decreases and how to weave in ends. Along the way you learn a flexible cast on, raglan decreases, simple embroidery techniques, how to combine leftover yarn and how to build your own colour combinations.

Cosy Cue

Tip from the designer: Lay the yarn leftovers out before you start knitting. By moving the colours around you can make the look harmonious or full of contrast – exactly how you want the sweater to be.
